This is a very beautiful and scenic hike. But it is very long and tiring if you do the whole 6 mile hike. The best and most beautiful views are the last couple of stopsAt the very end of the hike.I strongly suggest, that you go up towards the end of the hike rather than the start of the hike.At the intersection where it says to start the hike just go left toward the end of the hike. You will thank me for it!

Our very first trail we took in Algonquin Park was Booth's Rock. First of all we brought our small white dog and I had running shoes with no tread. You definitely need hiking boots for this trail or you could break your neck. Do not go on this trail if there has been lots of precipitation. There is so much mud, the trails are not a clear even path with a very uneven terrain. Opsticals like slippery rock, tree roots mud, steep and shallow areas were this entire trail. When you get to Booth's Rock which is more than 3km into the trail, you can easily miss this prime spot as there is no sign that says you have reached this fantastic rock and the beautiful scenery you will see at the top of the rock. Luckily my husband got curious and checked it out, otherwise we would have missed it and walked this terrible over 5km path for nothing. Best of luck to anyone who walks this path. Not recommended for someone with a walking aide or an elderly person who is uneven on their feet.

During late September this place is over run!!!! Go early in the morning and try and enter the park from the East Gates. Forget about the west gates in later September anytime after 10am. The line up is KM's long!

Of all the trails I walked during a recent weekend in Algonquin, this was my favourite. It's better to be there fairly early - before 10am - so that the trail and viewpoint are quieter. It's a 5km walk with some fairly steep sections but the bonus is that the last half is either downhill or flat. The trail can be quite rough in places and I'd recommend hiking boots because this isn't a boardwalk trail as the number of sprained ankles from 'flip-flop and trainers' hikers this weekend demonstrated. Also, the viewpoint is dangerous - it's a cliff - so if you take children then make sure they don't run away from you at the summit! Also, just as a tip, if there are cars parked on either side of the road leading to Booths then don't even try to park in the trailhead car park because there isn't much turn-around room at the end and chances are you'll get stuck. Also, be aware that RVs need to pass so try to park sensibly if you're lining the side of the roads.

    - Went today 28 Sep 2014. First stopped at visitor centre just past the East Gate on the right. - Stuff not really keen to explain most attractive sites, just handed over park info leaflet and told me to visit site marked with maple leaf icon.- Headed to Beaver Pond first, view from the cliff was not bad, other than that not much falls color.- Next stop was Look Out at KM40 but detour to Algonquin Visitor Centre en route. Wow, it's crowded. Managed to speak to a Japanese staff, he was extremely helpful in explaining various tracks and sights and photos on his iPad, highly recommended me to visit Booth's Rock next ( I was thinking of Hardwood initially)- Went to Look Out KM40 next, this place was busy but beautiful. Wish I was there before noon as the hill was backlit at 4pm so colors were dull- Next was Booth's Rock trail. Make it to the cliff about midway 2.7km of the trail before sunset. Gorgeous view, again could be much much better if not backlit, but not as bad as at the Look Out. Return through the south loop (clockwise direction) from the cliff is easier. So if you come here, use this section to ascent. If if you plan to see these these sites, best arrive by noon. Don't forget to buy Park Pass, we saw inspectors writing tickets.

Trail took us uphill for a long time, amid many kinds of bird calls, lots of different mushrooms to spot, some great trees-growing-over-boulder shots, and forest smells. They you come out on the rock and become stunned by the amazing panorama. Sat for half an hour just drinking the view in. Beware: they're not kidding when they say be careful of your children. The drop off is very dangerous and at the same time seductive - almost all the kids I saw there kept creeping closer to the edge to look down or throw things. Climbed back down and wanted to swim in lake at parking lot but kids demanded ice cream, so on to Two Rivers store we went!this trail is great for photographers, painters, or simply people wanting to get their socks knocked off by spectacular nature. The climbing and descending part can be a bit hard on the knees, so be prepared.

My wife and I hiked five of the trails in Algonquin, and this was easily our favorite. The views when you reach Booth’s rock are much better (less obstructed) than those we had on the other trails that offered views of the park. The first half is fairly strenuous, but not overwhelming (we are in our 50s and in “average” shape). The last portion is flat and follows the land where the railroad used to run, so while it isn’t the most scenic part of the trail, it does provide an easy finish. With a few rest breaks and stopping to take pictures, we completed the trail in just under three hours. There had been some recent rains so there were a couple pretty mucky parts to get past. Locating a stray branch (we had plenty to choose from) to use as a walking stick makes navigating those areas much easier.NOTES: There are free guide books for each trail that you can pick up when you start and drop off at the end of the trail. There are guideposts along the route that correspond with sections of the book. There are also blue reflectors on trees every so often, to let you know you are on the correct path. Finally, BE SURE TO TAKE BUG SPRAY! We had two kinds, a "natural" spray that didn't seem to even phase the mosquitos, and wipes with 30% Deet that kept them off for the most part. Since we used wipes, we couldn't really do anything for our clothes and the little buggers would bite through your shirt. We were there in mid-June and they were pretty bad; I can't speak for the rest of the year. Just be prepared!

We hiked this trail in early October on recommendation from one of the staff at Barlett's Lodge -- we had done the Lookout trail early. Both are rated as strenuous but can be done with ease by most folks in moderate physical shape. There are 3 separate lookouts each more spectacular than the last. The first part of the trail has some uphill hiking but the last half is down hill and then follows the old railroad line so is very easy. There are the remnants of a "summer lodge" near the end of the hike that is well worth the visit -- beautiful setting. Remember to purchase a park pass for any of the hikes.

We hiked Booth's Rock Trail on September 27, the average fall colour peak date. I wanted a trail that would offer a beautiful lookout, while not being too long or strenuous. Booth's Rock Trail is a 3-hour hike, rated as difficult. At a leisurely pace and with a lot of photo-taking, it took us about 4 hours. There's some uphill trekking, but it is very do-able. The first lookout we arrived at was not exactly what I expected based on photos I've seen on the web, because there were some trees in the way. I wasn't sure if there was another lookout further along, but we spent quite some time here taking photos. Then after we left this lookout, a bit farther along we came across the "real" lookout that had wide, unobstructed views of Algonquin Park and Rock Lake. So we took some more photos here. It was a spectacular view (though there is quite a bit of evergreen). You can't get a view like this without going at least this far out of the city. I was hoping to come across more colours along the trail, but it was mostly green. Luckily, we were recommended Hardwood Lookout Trail by Killarney Lodge for colour, which did have a lot more colourful maples along the trail. However, if you're looking for a spectacular lookout that's not as busy, I'd recommend Booth's Rock over Hardwood Lookout. We hiked Booth's Rock Trail on a Friday and Hardwood Lookout Trail on a Saturday. If you can go on a weekday to avoid the crowds, it'll be a more pleasant experience.
