squamish estuary

I found this place just by chance. If you like wildlife there is plenty to see. Birds, seals etc. Nice walks. We also saw people board paddling. It is worth a visit.

Saw the estuary wetlands from near the log mill and managed to find our way onto the estuary road. Immediately spotted seals and bald eagles. Later saw an Osprey. Lovely countryside. The road to get there should be signed. Directions..... turning off the highway into Squamish, turn first right, go over the railway track and down for at least half a km, looking for a track off left.

This was an easy walk to do in the morning before we checked out of the hotel. We have an estuary we visit in Florida so it was interesting to compare them.

Two eagles this weekend.......here they come!!!!!!! I knew it was early in the season, but was so excited I had to walk the dike road. Visited with several people who shared stories of days with hundreds/thousands of eagles in one day........felt very AK!!

During the warm season you'll see flocks of board-riders and have a great view of the Chief and surrounding mountains from the estuary. There are pleasant trails forest leading from the estuary into town.

The trails in and around the estuary are quite beautiful, as is Squamish itself. So nice, surrounded by the Ocean with all of the wild life! Bring your camera!

The Estuary is an excellent introduction to Squamish. Using #100 of 109 Walks in British Columbia by Macaree to find the trail head. The tree root gnarly trail from the train tracks to the edges of the estuary was beautiful. Not strenuous, but a little tricky for your feet. There are birding signs everywhere, but on the day I went we had drenching rain, so didn't see any birds. But there were beautiful ripe salmon berries everywhere. Wish I had brought a basket to pick some. There were definitely some muddy areas. Tip: Bring a dry pair of clothes and shoes for apres hike! And when you finish, you're right next to Howe Sound Brewery, so enjoy a well deserved draft.It's urban hiking - not much uphill, but feels like you are deep in nature.
