It is an absolutely beautiful tomb but it is hard to take it all in. The basilica is so overwhelming that it is hard to appreciate the beauty of everything.

Bernini is everywhere in St. Peter's Basilica, but the tomb of Pope Urban VIII is a real standout in the Basilica itself. Not to be missed!

Yet another masterpiece by Bernini inside St. Peter's Basilica. Photos are allowed inside the basilica as long as you do not use a flash but photos do not do justice to these beautiful works of art. You must see them in person to truly appreciate the beauty and complexity of Bernini's work.

Pope Urban VIII was a 17th century pope and a man of arts. He was a prominent patron of the arts and reformer of Church missions. This tomb is a beautiful piece of art.

As the name suggests, this is Urban VIII's tomb designed by Bernini. Bernini started work on this 18 years before the death of Urban VIII. This is another "must not miss" attraction within St. Peter's Basilica.

Pope Urban VIII, originally Maffeo Barberini, was one of the first and most influential popes of the baroque era. Urban VIII was a well-educated and cultured man. He loved the art and literature. It was Urban VIII who was the mentor of Bernini, when he came to Rome as a young boy. Bernini was given access to the Vatican museum, where he studied the masterpieces of classical sculpture. When Maffeo Barberini was elected Pope Urban VIII in 1623, he was only 55 years old. He appointed Bernini in charge of the Vatican art and he commissioned Bernini to design the famous bronze Baldacchino. For he construction of the tomb of Urban VIII, Bernini used the tomb of Pope Paul III as a model. The tomb shows a bronze statue of Urban VIII. Bernini usually made his statues from marble, but considered the dark bronze for the deceased Pope more appropriate.Urban VIII sits on top of a large platform, above the sarcophagus. Below the platform we see death, in the form of a skeleton. The sarcophagus is made of bronze and bears the Barberini bees. The two marble statues represents Charity on the left side and Justice on the right side of the sarcophagus. Charity is one of the Christian values and justice is the main cardinal value. It is said that the lively marble statues helps the grieving process. A magnificent masterpiece of Bernini! The photos above this review are actually of the tomb of Pope Gregory XIII who was Pope from 1572 till 1585. The tomb is one of Rusconi's masterpieces and replaced the original tomb in 1723.

This has to be up there with the Pieta for sure. This tremendous marble statue with its incredible detail is just magnificent to take in. This is one of the many gorgeous and priceless statues within the Basilica and you will not want to miss it~!

One of the most magnificent sculptures that I have ever seen. I would rank in just below Michelangelo's David and Pieta and right with his own David. Even surrounded by awe-inspiring works, this stands alone.

The monument was truly breathtaking with all its details. I literally had to touch it to believe the amount of details craved on it. Made of Marble the size of the monument will leave you awe stricken!
