This is a place to think about history and all those who fought for the Norway we love so much today. Its creepy and exciting all the same, and there is a lot to learn if you use a guide. The large canon is just frightening, and unbelievably huge - and well kept. The bunkers and everything else makes you touch and feel some war history unknown until you visit.

Artillery instalations constructed by German Wehrmacht shortly after the invation of Norway in 1940. a similar battery was built in Hanstholm, Denmark to prevent British warships to approach Norway, Denmark and the Baltic.Ranging about 55 kilometres the batteries in Hanstholm and Kristiansand covered most of the Skaw passage. The Fortress is well kept and will give you a good information of 2nd Worls War history.

Interesting for both jung and old.The germans who buildt this used prisoners of war. It took them some years and plenty of man-hours. The first canon were to be freighted here was sunk in the sea by the english. The big canon (the second biggest in the world) could shot half the way to Denmark.After the war the norwegian made a testshot and managed to break all the windows on Flekkerøy island! If You bring Your own picnic basket and the weather is fine this is an excellent place for a pause.As the title says You have an astonishing view over the sea and of the surroundings almost 360 degrees around.

Great WWII history site. You feel like you are a part of a WWII movie set. It was cloudy/foggy the day we were there in June, 2013, so I could not see the ocean. We walked from the Queen Victoria cruise ship down the pier to the tourist info booth. They had a info sheet on the Kanon Mueseum and how to get there. We walked to downtown, got 400 Krone from an ATM, then took the city bus from downtown to the museum (about 1/2 hour). The city bus was a tad expensive (I think 38 Krone each way). If you did a rushed walk/tour, you might be able to get back on a return bus before the transfer time expires. But, it is worth spending some time in the museum and paying a separate fare back to down. This 15 inch gun is the same as type as on the Bismarck battleship. The range on this gun was longer (37 Miles?) because it was at a high elevation and could angle the gun up to 55 degrees to take advantage of Northerly winds. I think the only German made cannon bigger than this is a 16 inch gun they installed as another shore battery further north in Norway. Only 6 people from the cruise ship went to the Kanon Museum the day the Queen Victoria was in port. It's a shame that Cunard does not run a ship's excursion to the KanonMuseum. It was a lot more interesting than the regular bus tour of churches that get quickly boring.

We took our nieces here (ages 13 and 12) and they loved it as much as we did! We had a great tour guide but you could easily tour this on your own. It's an impressive piece of history--the Germans were (and still are) incredible engineers. Parts of the machinery are still functioning thanks to a local man who took a keen interest in the cannon. Views from the museum are great.

If you have any interest in World War II history, and a fascination for cannons, this is the place. In this museum, you'll see some of the largest cannons and gun installations used by the Nazi-German forces at all.
