Wandering around in and outside of the rebuilt buildings and walls of the fort leads the visitor into the history of Marseille. The entry is for free and a short video installation provides sound background information about the history of Marseille and the purpose of the fort. We found this sight very interesting. On top, there is the great view on Marseille, the hill with Notre Dame de la Garde and the harbour and sea.

Unfortunately when we went most of the fort was closed. We went as part of the MSC Med Cruise. It sound good to go on a cruise but there is too little time to discover on your own. On Sundays everything opens late or is closed and they won't speak English even if they know it.

Not really just Fort Saint-Jean but now MuCEM, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations. Beautiful makeover, but full of 'space' rather than exhibitions. Just go and enjoy the stunning buildings and the views but don't expect a museum.

This beautifully restored and tastefully done. It is a wonderful adaptation of something old into a modern masterpiece. It is definitely worth the visit.

This Fort covers a site of 1.5 hectares and its history going back 26 centuries! In the 6th century BC a group of Greeks stepped ashore here and founded a city. The Romans took over the area in the 1st century BC. The fort is built on a natural hill and during the 6th to 10th centuries Marseilles suffered numerous attacks and invasions with the old fortifications being strengthened and extended. The layout of the grounds has been well restored and planted with different landscapes from different cultures. It shows the Jewish, Moslem and Christian pharmacopoeias used in different parts of the Mediterranean. These plants were all labelled and there were fancy iron arrows indicating different species. The view over the city and bay from the fort is quite spectacular. One interesting room we went into had a model circus set up. This was made many years ago and had taken the maker something like 40 years to complete. The Guard Room had the history of Marseille in several different languages, being projected onto the walls. We didn't go into the actual museum, Musee des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Mediterranee as we had spent too much looking at the fort itself. Definitely this place is worth a visit.

I thought this museum and monument space was very well done. You can meander the old fort area and run into little art installations or historically significant locations on the fort. It's a very beautiful space where the modern structures and are tastefully and seamlessly integrated with the old. It was a very peaceful experience despite the crowds and proximity to the Vieux Port. I spent a few hours wondering and sitting in different places and enjoyed it immensely. For the photographers, you also get great views of the city's landmarks as well.

We came upon the entrance to the Fort Saint-Jean while walking around the port, and we were pleased to find such a neat site. Entrance is free, and you enter to find a unique juxtaposition of old and new with the original fort and contemporary museum across the bridge. There are a couple of lunch options within the fort, as well as helpful people who can help share the history of the fort. While there are a lot of stairs, there is also an elevator for mobility throughout the site. Great view back into the city and port area from the top of the fort!

Fort Saint-Jean is located at the entrance of old port , just in line with Fort Saint Nicolas located on the other bank of the old portFort Saint Jean is more old than the Fort Saint Nicolas , and more beautiful , constructed in the 13th century to be a fortress , then added to the Fortress in 15th century the square tower (tour carre) of king Rene , then added a lighthouse (Tour Fanal)This place worth to be visit , it provides a magnificent view of the old port and the city of Marseille , but only for persons who have not the fear of heights.

Fort Saint-Jean has more to offer than what might be visible from the outside, namely the gardens on top of the fort that have various herbs and plants from across the region. The bridge joining this old fort and the relatively new Mediterranean museum is a lovely visual. The views of the port make for beautiful pictures.
