The tour guide was a wealth of knowledge on history of the plantation, surrounding area and the state. It appeared that she seemed to tailor each tour according to the interests the tourists - showing a very personal attention to detail. The plantation was beautiful and appears to have been very well kept. The only request I would have for the day would have been more souvenirs in the little country store/gift shop. But, we were able to get enough pictures to commemorate the day that the lack of souvenirs does not decrease my rating of our tour. If you're near the Washington, GA area make sure you stop to enjoy this great little piece of history!

I'm a home schooling mom of three elementary aged children and we visited on a Tuesday around 11:00. We had the place to ourselves. For all four of us, we paid around $23 and had an hour and a half private tour. Susanna, the guide, walked us carefully through each structure on the property and provided such great information. Not only was this plantation and its history one of her passions, she delivered the information in a fascinating way for her audience of young children. She answered my kids' questions with kindness and totally framed her responses to give them more to think about. I love it when docents or tour guides can give this kind of personalized attention to inquisitive kids. After a unit study on the Civil War, our tour brought many aspects of that time period to life. We learned about the cotton and tobacco production, the economics of the plantation as well as what day-to-day life would have been like.We especially loved hearing about some of Martha Callaway's quirky behavior, seeing the "spare" caskets and seeing all of the tools and accoutrements of the kitchen area. This plantation tour can be done free of charge by walking around the grounds. The paid tour includes admission into five of the locked structures. We did the paid tour, left to find a lunch spot (CJs Pizza downtown...totally worth it) and then we came back and did more of a self guided tour around the plantation grounds. Since so much is outdoors and includes lots of walking, I'd pick a day when the weather promises to be pleasant. We had a great time and are planning to go back in October for their annual "Day of the Mule." They have easily accessible restrooms and a large picnic area with plenty of tables.

While driving Hwy 78 from Athens, GA to the SC coast for a mini vacation we saw the sign "Mule Day" so of course we had to stop. For the next couple of hours we became tourists in our own history. We were at the historic Callaway Plantation. 56 Acres of History and, on this day mules. Modest cost of $10.00 per vehicle got us a mule plowing contest, docents talking about the history of the plantation, classic cars, civil war reenactors, access to the plantation buildings, stills, yarn spinners, expert barbequers, and the best home churned peach ice cream I've ever had! . The grounds available are gorgeous so take your time and bring your mule with you if you're lucky enough to have one!.

Three houses to tour on one property. Great for the history enthusiast! Wonderful tour of Georgia history!

Took a day trip out to Washington GA and this tour was the highlight! I had a one on one tour, and it was well worth the price of admission. Interesting, informative, and engaging - brought the place to life hearing about the family. Fun to see how the housing of the family evolved over time, from a log cabin, to a 2 story home, and finally to the impressive plantation house that was completed in 1869. It seemed funny to be driving along seeing the county airport on one side of the road, and then this compound of buildings right across the road! There are quite a few outbuildings as well and well worth the time to make a stop here.

We visited Callaway on our visit to Washington. The home is well restored and maintained and the tour guide was very informative and helpful. The main house has a lot of history and period furnishings plus the out buildings are equally interesting especially the Gray House. We would recommend this house for history buffs of the South as well as architecture of the Ante Bellum period! Tour price was reasonable and was the only home we toured as the Toombs House was closed and most other old homes are private though marked with signage and a self guided tour map helps find and identify these as you walk or drive(pretty spread out if you walk especially in summer heat). Washington, Madison and Harlem area very interesting with lots of history and as a side it is the birth area of Oliver Hardy of Laurel and Hardy fame. Enjoy your visit!

Had a one-to-one tour of the grounds and main house with a very knowledgeable guide Susanna Carter. The Callaway family that settled from England in the 1700's were the ancestors of the modern day Californian Callaway golf company. The tour was worth every cent of the $7 admission.

This is a MUST visit if you are in this area. Very nice history of this family, the way of life in the old days - lots of various buildings, photos, period furniture and a great walk-around tour where our guide was so articulate and knowledgeable - not the usual restrictions inside the house - one can move as freely as desired in most rooms.

This was an excellent tour. The lady that showed us around was energetic, informative, and very enjoyable. A must see!

An interesting place to visit with a lot of local history. The tour is best if Olivia is the guide. Well maintained homes with period and some original family pcs. We take all of our out of town guests here and they all love it. Last year the tour was $4 each. Other reviewer said it was $7, not sure if that's true.

An hour drive from the Athens, Ga. area. This is a must see trip well worth the time for those interested in American History. From the American Revolution through the American Civil War up to today trace the history of the Callaway Family through this historic time. See and experience the land where they lived and the houses they built. Look at what risks they took and what they did to survive. There were no malls or department stores, they had to be self reliant or perish. The guide also made this a fun experience, she was knowledgeable and interested in their history and was very happy to answer our questions. Admission was very reasonable and inexpensive, so take the whole family. Also, note that the City of Washington, Ga., is a stones throw from here and another spot of historical significance you will want to look into when planning your trip.

Wonderful place to bring the whole family. Lots of fun at the Annual Mule Day in October every year, and very pretty at Christmas too. History abounds here.
