Weird burlsThis is a little known spot along US-101, a bit south of Kalaloch Ranger Station. Don’t be confused by the similarly named, and more famous “2nd Beach” which is up by la Push near Forks and can be found on many maps and web sites. This is “Beach 2”, that one is “2nd (or Second) Beach”. They sure are creative with beach names in the these parts.Look for a small sign and a small parking strip along the highway. Be observant cause it’s easy to miss – as we did and had to circle back. We didn’t go all the way down to the beach so can’t comment on that. What we stopped here to see were the trees between the road and cliff edge. The walk to see these weird tree formations is less than 10 feet from the highway and all level. Of course you can hike in some more to see more of the trees. The trail stays level for about a quarter of a mile till it hits the cliff edge which is as far as we went. From there I believe it turns and starts heading down to the beach. In this little patch of Sitka Spruce forest almost all of the trees have large strange burls growing on them making for a very interesting scene. As it’s right next to the highway it’s worth a 15 minute stop to see.If you found this information useful in your decision making process, you gleaned information you may not have otherwise discovered, or you just enjoyed reading it and appreciate the time I put into writing it, please give me a "helpful" vote.
