So cool. There's nothing else like it and it's over 80 years old. Definitely worth driving by if you're nearby.

Amazing this is the only original shell-shaped station left in the country. A really nice photo stop when visiting the city. There was some interesting memorabilia inside the station, but you can only see through window, it is not open for the public to go inside.

Nice photo op. True Americana and reminder or a bygone era. Only takes a few moments. Worth a drive by and brief stop if on I-40 or in Winston-Salem

I lived a couple of blocks away when I wrote my review warning folks to be aware of your surroundings. Since my concerns were dismissed as racist by a reviewer who had never met me and obviously never seen my partner, I thought I would clarify. The area around the iconic shell station is neat, tidy, and right smack in the middle of a drug-dealing area known for its high rate of crimes against persons. It's almost perfectly safe during the day, since all the bad actors tend to sleep until about 5pm. The station is great and well worth a photo op. Just don't come late in the day. And do be aware of who's around, as you should be pretty much everywhere.

This is the coolest Shell station I've ever been to. A true Winston-Salem classic! You can take a lot of fun pictures. Stop by if you're in the area but don't go to Winston just to see this. While you can't get gas here, this place will fuel your excitement!

This is a former service station and a local landmark. If you have a classic car, it's a must visit for a great photo opportunity.

Stopped by just to take a few pictures. It is in the middle of a neighborhood, just on a corner. This was probably state of the art in it's day. Glad to see that the historical society is preserving it. If you are in W/S stop by for a look.

This is a fun place to visit. Isn't in the best area of town so wouldn't go during the evening but easy to get to and great place for pictures

The Shell station is in beautiful shape and I'm glad I saw it. There are not many old places like this still around. Some reviewers mentioned it being in a bad neighborhood. If they meant because it has non-Caucasians, I don't call that "bad". The houses around the station are uniformly neat and tidy.

Such a unique part of our history that was so different of anything today. This piece of archectural design is simple but awesome and its almost gone and forgotten.

I grew up very near this fun gas station, which was originally built in 1930. There used to be several in the area, but only this one is left. It was not in good shape until Preservation North Carolina stepped in and restored it to its original condition. It's a great photo-opportunity, especially if you have a vintage vehicle because there's nothing around to interfere with the view. You can also go across the street if you need a wider view and wait for the light traffic to clear for your shot.

A fun place to grab a memorable photo with visiting friends and familyIn a working class neighborhood this restored architectural folly is a window to our American past.

Great to see historic places like this. I stopped with my kids and took lots of pictures (and did not feel scared like another post mentioned). It's a small place so you should not need to hang out for more than 5 minutes. Definitely worth the time, even though I got lost finding this place as my GPS could not locate it without a street number (which is 1111 E. Sprague by the way!)

Found this here on Trip Advisor and didn't pay attention to the "warnings". I drove from Hanging Rock State Park to see this. Had I have "listened" to the warnings I would have found that this place is indeed in a "less than desirable" neighborhood. I love photographing unique places like this, but I didn't even get out of my car as there was a gentleman eyeing me as I did a u-turn and headed out of the area.

If you don't get a chance to stop in (not the best area) at least ride by and take a look/photo of this tiny bit of early auto history. This early gas station is just a hop off US-52 and worth the effort to ride by for a look.
