We stop there often to saw the boats and barges. A special time was when a large river boat passed through the lock. We talked with the passengers.

Interesting watching the boats go thru the locks and to cross the train tracks to see this it is a metal walkway that goes over the train as it goes thru..fun to watch, brings alot of tourists.

Lock and Dam 4 is easily accessible right along Hwy 35 in Alma, WI. There is a platform that affords a very good view of the locks and dam. If there is a barge and tow going through, the view is amazing; but it's fun just to watch pleasure boats enter the lock and go either up or down. It's certainly worth a stop if you've never watched boats navigate the Mississippi.

Its a nice little break if you are on the highway enjoying a crisp fall morning- its an amazing feat of engineering. plus theres a pedestrian bridge over the train tracks, so you can stand directly above as trains FLY by.

Free to come watch the boats lock through. Have had a thrill many times when a train goes right under the bridge you walk acrosse to reach the observation deck at the the dam.

This was a neat stop. It was the first lock and dam on our way along the Mississippi. While we were there a ski boat went through so the kids got to see how to water levels change. It was neat and a worthwile stop.
