stearns history museum

Had occasion to visit SHM while doing genealogy research one rainy afternoon. Since my family was from the St. Cloud area, I was delighted to find a vast amount of info on my family! The records department has an elderly gentleman who is very informative, does German translations, and knew several family members. The exhibits were lots of fun and educational. Imagine my surprise to find my grandparents home in a miniture display of old downtown St. Cloud! Well worth the time spent.

The value in this place might be in the outdoor trails and the research center. But as a museum with exhibits it falls short. There is one nicely done room that recreates the natural environment of the area in the 1850s. But the rest of the museum is mostly just arranged items behind glass. It is not interactive nor otherwise engaging. Nothing like the very well done Minnesota Historical Association sites throughout the state.

I went to the Family History Center in the Stearns county History Museum to research my family tree. Everyone I talked to was very helpful and I was surprised to see how much information they have. They even had a book about the town my great-grandparents lived in that had a picture of my great-grandfather in his store that I had never seen before.

This is a wonderful museum - exhibits are outstanding - love the exhibit with wildlife, birds and MN landscape.

We learned so much about the area from this museum. We had a great time and they had so many different interesting displays! The short video clips were great to learn more about the local history and parts of town. I would definitely recommend this museum if you're in the area.

One of the highlights of the trip. Very informative and well organized museums recently visited. The displays were awesome. Received an education in an enjoyable way.

This little museum packs a lot of history into it!! Learn about the Pantown cars (native to St. Cloud) and the founder, Sam Pandolfo's, stint in federal prison. Quarry mining is an important industry in the Granite City - see how it's mined in one of the exhibits.
