The house itself is architecturally a bit of a folly, but still very interesting nonetheless. It certainly has an impressive location! If you're a fan of Church, you'd probably find this to be a "must do". We came as a group just generally interested in a neat house; there were lots of interesting touches and pieces to see. The tour is restricted to the ground floor, but it contains lots of things that had belonged to the Churches and quite a bit of artwork.

As a person raised in Hudson, one of the best "sights" is definitely Olana. Church's art work is worth viewing. The grounds are beautiful, and for me especially in the autumn when the leaves are such brilliant colors and the Hudson River is running below.

Olana is a unique architectural joy and well worth a visit, particularly on a nice day as the grounds and views are as impressive as the building. Church was one of those rare artists who was successful in his time and Olana represents his success. Don't expect to see much (good) art on the tour - probably a good thing as the lighting is limited. We chose to hike the trail at North-South pond across the river (and through the woods) the following day - very cool to enjoy the artists views and get in a decent hike.

We enjoyed the guided tour and the landscape. Make sure to make a reservation. We're able to do that by phone in the same day we visited.

Perched up on the hill like a castle, Olana is a very impressive home steeped in the history of painted Thomas Church. It is a gloomy old home and not as impressive as the Victorian Christmas decorated ones further down but is impressive for its Eastern designs and how the house worked as a home and studio and not just a summer cottage for a few months. The view alone is worth the visit.

I visited Olana on December 28. The previous night I made the reservation, which was free, and my place might be taken by other if I did not show up half an hour before the scheduled tour. The address is confusing so that my old GPS could not locate it. But it is very easy to give the direction. I stopped by the Cold’s house on the west side of the river. It is on Route 9G and is very close to the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. I drove to the hilltop and park there. I got the ticket for $9 at the gift shop, and joined 11:00 tour, instead of 12:00 one. It was good for me, since it would give me more time to travel on the Hudson, and was good for shop, because it might sell one more ticket. The lady was rather informative. I loved two of Church’s paintings in memory of his first son and daughter, who died very young. The Sunrise was for his son, while the moonrise for his daughter. His Our Banner in the Sky blends the color with sunset, which is original and memorable. He was well-travelled and rather creative. I was told that by the 1880s, the impressionists outshone landscape painters. I have to say that old furniture and decorations did not appeal to me that much, because they were not that unique and I may be more of a “philistine” on this matter. The house itself features the Persian motif, and allows a majestic view of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountain. At the end of tour, I found the gift shop rather unique, and watched two documentaries on this house and on the painter. I wish I had done it before the tour, and would love to walk in the woods and near the man-made lake in the future. Overall, this is a must see for the Hudson Valley.

Olana has a magical combination of magnificent views of the Hudson, interesting and unusual architecture, and the rare chance to experience an interior that has been preserved exactly as it was, with original contents including many works of art, and collections that Frederic Church brought back from his travels across Europe and Asia in the 1800's. Fascinating. Visited in the winter and the summer. You should book in advance on the website if you want to tour the house in the peak summer season at a weekend. It is very popular and busy in the summer months.

In a magnificently beautiful setting in the Hudson Valley sits Olana, a tribute to the talent and vision of Fredrick Church. This home is a time capsule containing many original paintings by Church and other artists, in addition to rugs and furniture from the time his family lived there. Perfectly maintained and cared for by the state and staffed with people knowledgeable in the history of Church and his paintings.Take the time to visit and tour the house and grounds, enjoy the many beautiful vistas on the property.

We went to Olana specifically for the annual Plenair event. There were 30 artist painting on the property for three days. Stunning views of the Hudson Valley! We had a lovely walk on the property and were able to view the artist at work and chat with them. Then we toured the Fredrick Church home, which was fascinating. The next day we went back for the auction / cocktail party, where the wet paintings were auctioned to benefit the estate. Very fun event. We even had the winning bid for our favorite painting. Highly recommend visiting Olana.

Having visited the grounds at Olana many times over the years, we finally took the house tour. Olana is certainly unique in the Hudson Valley in its Persian influenced design. The tour is informative and interesting, and the house layout was of great interest to me. It's amazing to think the the house was still lived in as it is up to 1966! One disappointment is that the lighting inside is dim so all the artwork on the walls is difficult to appreciate. With all the advances in lighting systems today, it would be nice if Olana could manage to illuminate the paintings a bit better.

Olana is not to be missed on a trip to the Hudson area. I'm a huge fan of the Hudson Valley school and always lingered at the collection the Met in New York, so it was a delight to see where it originated. Best part: strolling the manicured grounds with a breathtaking view of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains.

One of the most original homes ever built and in a spot that is breathtaking. A total education into the life and work of Hudson River painter Frederic Church. The paintings in the house alone are enough to fill a major museum. The views from every window are spectacular, capturing all the beauty of the Hudson river. A fascinating trip back to the 19th Century and forward to our more enlightened views today of the environment. Perfect attraction for all ages.

This is a very special spot on the Hudson. The tour guides are volunteers, and our guide, Susan, was very informative. This is a 2 minute drive from Hudson, and a good hour visit for anyone who wants to learn more about the area. For those who appreciate interior design and landscape gardening, it is a must.

We have visited Olana several times and it is always a real pleasure. Any time of the year, it has a lot of charm. We have taken the house tour and it is very instructive about the Hudson River school of painting? The views from and around the house are breathtaking.

This is a most unusual and interesting (in a very good way) historic home, where Frederic Church (of 1800s Hudson River School art fame) lived with his family. The entire story pertaining to this once-famous, but now little known artist, is fascinating. The fact he himself designed and decorated this massive home overlooking the Hudson River makes it a magical place to tour. This home is a "must-see" if you're traveling through this part of Upstate New York. Most of the furnishings and art works hanging on the walls are original to the home. The movie in the Visitors' Center is highly informative.
