traditional arts in upstate new york/tauny

As an ethnomusicologist (and therefore partial folklorist), TAUNY is a FANTASTIC place for me! And as someone who very much wants to see local artisans, musicians, etc, supported as much as possible to help the actual people in the local economy, I LOVE this place! My only complaint is that I always leave wishing I could buy just about everything in the store. :-)

Visited here after a student tour of St. Lawrence University. A really nice shop with great crafts and artworks from local artisans. I picked up a gorgeous Amish split-oak basket and two jugs of Upstate NY Maple Syrup from local growers.Had a great chat with the lady working in there who shared information about SLU and living in the area.If you are through the area and looking for a place to get a gift or a souvenir reminiscent of the North Country, this place is a great pick! Hope to be back some day.

Lots of interesting stuff to see and buy. I hope to get back here for some Christmas shopping. Some very talented people in the North Country. Displays are excellent also.

The "museum" has been newly renovated with displays of both Amish and "english" wares. We especially liked the different buggys and quilts that were shown. There was furniture made by local craftspeople and the new front desk is a beautiful example of North Country work. Local items such as maple syrup, wool products, furniture, and pottery are for sale.
