Does not matter what time of the year it is you must make sure you don't pass this up. Beautiful! Rent a car or taxi. As I said this is a must see.

In the late fall, the Chilkoot is often overlooked for eagle photographers, but it has the best scenery anywhere. Evergreens, mossy rocks in a babbling stream. Very much a nature photographer's paradise. Eagles are much fewer in the late fall than along the Chilkat, but for the scene, you need to visit the Chilkoot Rover State Park. Black and Brown bears do feed along the river. Although by November, most are up in the mountains hibernating. Keep looking as, I've seen a brown bear as late as Nov 30. Seals come during high tide even in the late fall.

A short drive from town you may see bears at the fish weir. They come down to the weir and eat the fish that get trapped. Drive a little further upriver and you'll come to Chilkoot Lake, a pretty mountain lake teeming with salmon. There is also a big campground here with sites scattered throughout the trees. There are several spots to stop along the road to view the eagles and mergansers zipping through the water.

September is the time we went. Saw bald eagles fishing in river removing spawning chum (dog)salmon. Saw two bears as well doing the same. This is a wonderful photographic experience.

Like most of Alaska this is a beautiful river and going up into the mountains and looking down is just stunning. Beautiful!

First off, this river is stunning. The water is light teal and the river is filled with boulders. In addition to the scenery being perfect, the wildlife in this area is spectacular. While we were there (we rented bikes and rode up to the river/lake), we saw baby bald eagles, full grown bald eagles, salmon and a bear! We even were fortunate enough to see the bear eating salmon out of the river. Once in a lifetime experience!

You will see Grizzly bears fishing for salmon and bald eagles coming in for the winter here at the Chilkoot. Beauty abounds. Relaxing and refreshing.

Just beautiful. Bears, eagles, salmon, beautiful & pristine setting - what else could you ask? We stayed near the river and loved it so much...didn't want to go home. Al little piece of paradise.

Beautiful scenery. Numerous eagles. Great guides. See review for Eagle Preserve Float for more information.

Worth taking a drive to see...you might spot a bear hunting for salmon, we did. Keep going and you will hit the Chilkoot Lake.

We enjoyed watching the fish jump in Chilkoot Lake and the beautiful scenery along the river. We were not fortunate enough to see brown bears but did see many eagles. The eagles were high in the evergreens and on rocks down by the flats.

We loved watching the bald eagles feeding off the fish in the river and even caught a picture of one swooping down to snag a fish!

A distance from the center of Haines, you will need to have a car or go by bus. A beautiful spot to observe eagles and individuals fishing the river. The DNR does a fish count here to monitor the fish returning to the spawning grounds. Just up the hill is a campground. In the evening hours the bears come down from the hills to feast on the salmon.

We visited the Chilkoot 3 times while in Haines. I think this is the most beautiful place. We kayaked the lake, had a bike ride along the waterside and just sat and enjoyed watching all the eagles. Saw tons of salmon in the lake while kayaking. I loved this place

We drove past on our way to a wildlife viewing tour. Our bus stopped a few times along the way. Bald Eagles catching fish and nesting nearby. Interesting to see the national park service weir and salmon counting area. Our guide explained the way the locals used to use fish traps in the current.
