If you are near Munich and have a car to your disposal, then this is a trip you should take. Drive to Kelheim and there you take a river cruise on the Danube through a deep gorge. The scenery is beautiful and you see several historic areas on your way to the Abbey at Weltenburg. The trip is about 1hr to the abbey and you should plan to spend about 2-3hrs at the abbey. The treat is that the monks have been brewing great beer for centuries and you should partake in a mid-day meal at the abbey restaurant which serves the beer. Sightseeing at the abbey takes only about a half hour or so. The chapel has a beautiful altar with a statue of St George on the altar. After your visit to the abbey you take the cruise back (45min) to Kelheim. The small town of Kelheim is also a pleasant place to discover and maybe have your evening meal at a local restaurant. Wonderful day!

We giggled that we opted to take this optional tour from our Viking cruise, due to it being more river cruising. This actually was the best scenery of the whole cruise. Even though it was an overcast October day we sat on top to get the full view. The boat made it way through the winding canal and allowed us to soak up the spectacular view while tasking wheat beer. After 40 minutes we arrive at the monastery and even though it wasn't as big as I expected it, it made up with the most gorgeous chapel that I have ever seen. Through my travels I've seen great big ornate cathedrals but this was spectacular. It was small and we were up front and centre to all the décor. We had a very good tour guide for this portion of the tour it was worth hearing all the history. Afterwards we walked a ways to catch our bus. It was definitely worth the trip.

My husband took me on a date day to Weltenburg Abbey. We caught a ferry in Kelheim which took us up (or down?) the Donau river to the abbey. The ferry ride took about 40 minutes and was the perfect way to travel to our final destination. We had a glass of wine and a snack as we took in the gorgeous scenery. We enjoyed watching the kayakers, and climbers that were taking advantage of the sunny skies as we cruised. Aside from the unique rocky walls on either side of the riverway, you also get a glimpse of Liberation Hall up on a hilltop. When you finally see Weltenburg Abbey for the first time, it does not disappoint. It's everything you'd imagine. The site dates back to 600 but the current Abbey is from the 18th century. The interior's ornate decoration keeps your eyes busy. It was nice to sit in the quiet, cool abbey and just take it all in. Centrally located in the main altar is an impressive statue of St. George on his white horse. Since my hubby is in a cavalry unit, we enjoyed seeing their patron saint on display. The brewery is next door to the abbey and you can enjoy a tour (for a small fee), and a tasting.There is also a small but charming frauenkirche up the hill that is a sweet feminine companion to the abbey below. We followed our sightseeing up with lunch in the courtyard, which was very good. I think the best outings are ones when you get history, beauty, and good food. This place had it all.

My sister and I visited in June of 2012, I really had no idea what a treat we were in for, the church is something surreal and I don't believe any camera could ever capture anything close to the ambience permeating from every angle. The beer was incredible. We took a boat ride after touring the Abby and it was a beautiful experience.

Kloster Weltenburg is definitely worth a visit. The monastery is not accessible by car. You have to catch a ferry from Kelheim a little further down the Danube, so sit back and enjoy the beautiful trip up the Danube. I noticed that a lot of local people caught the ferry and swam or drifted on small inflated boats back to the original point of departure. A nice way to spend a hot summer afternoon. The monastery was founded around 600 AD which makes it the oldest monastery in Bavaria (and possibly the world). The baroque church was built in the 18th century and houses a unique organ and fine pieces of art. The monastery also houses a little museum (entrance fee) which is only interesting if you read German, and a prize-winning brewery which also serves food. Award yourself a cool beer after a few hours of looking around the grounds!

We took a short river cruise to get here. The scenery is beautiful. Food was great, beer was perfect! I loved this place and can't wait to go back.

If you're a beer drinker you have to go to the Weltenburg Monastery. They've been brewing beer for a thousand years and it shows. Every beer was amazing, the dunkel was especially tasty. My wife who is not a beer drinker loved it. Be sure to check out the chapel, absolutely beautiful, and the museum is fun. Pay the price to watch the video about the brewing of their beer. Worth it. A side trip worth the time.

This is a brilliant place to visit. Beautiful Church. One of the most picturesque parts of the Danube. Great beer and pretzels, Could have spent the whole day here

The boat tour from Kelheim through the Danube narrows had some of the most beautiful scenery we experienced on our Viking cruise. This was an optional side trip and should not be missed. The abbey is incredibly ornate.

We took a short, but beautiful boat ride to get to the abbey. Once there, we toured the church which was plain on the outside, but very elaborate and ornate on the inside. Following that, we were treated to a pretzel and the abbey's beer, which was very good

Sept 23A stop at the Weltenberg Monastery when in Regensburg is a must. To reach the monastery we hired a private guide and mini-bus for the 12 of us. Inside we had a local guide Lisa tell us more about the its history and architecture. Without Lisa's narrative, we would think that it is just another church.The other importance of Weltenberg is the brewery that may have been one of Europe's earliest. There is a large terrace restaurant but we were there too early to enjoy a sip.From there we boarded a small boat to better view Danube Gorge, the narrowest part of the Danube River with vertical cliffs. We disembarked in Kelheim where we had a short walking tour before lunch at Weisses Brauhaus.

They've been brewing almost one hundred years so it's no surprise that they know their stuff! It's arguably the best beer I had in Germany. Definitely the best apple strudel. I recommend taking a hike up the stairs near the church for some great views.We missed out on taking the tour because we didn't book in advance. Make sure you book in advance!

This site is a great place and a must for everyone. The impressive building and church will give you a memory for life. But the most impressive matter is the effectiveness of the fantastic kitchen. A great schweinhachse was served in 5 min.

The Abbey is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Try and book a guided tour into the amazing church. You will just not believe this beautiful and amazing decor. The design and paintings, especially the ceiling are wondrous.The food in the outdoor restaurant is good as is the beer which is brewed in the brewery in the monastery. The oldest brewery in a monastery in Europe.Then of course there is the beautiful Danube flowing through the gorge with an opportunity to take a river trip.This is well worth making an effort to visit.There is a fee for the guided tour of a couple of Euros each.

Beer has been brewed here since 1050 - that alone makes it amazing. But the location on the river and the bucolic surroundings make it a must visit place if you are in the area. Taste the dunkel which comes straight from the brewery and walk around, sit at the meadow above the monastery and watch the river flow by - as people have done here for more than 1000 years - you will feel and sense how special this place is, truly a gem. Don't miss the high water marks form various floods on one of the walls - mind blowing to imagine how high it can get.
